Born and raised in North Carolina, the Tan and Sober Gentlemen began taking in the songs, stories, and tunes that make up their beloved state’s musical tradition before they could talk.
The music of the Carolinas, (and Appalachia in general) stems from the marriage of the Irish fiddle and the African banjo, which first met in the American South before the Revolution. The Tan and Sober Gentlemen aim to bring these traditions full circle. They play Irish tunes, ballads, and pub songs right next to the Appalachian fiddle tunes of their youth, melding the two into what they call “Irish-American hillbilly music."

Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Jack Wharff and his band Tobacco Flatts play a stunningly unique blend of bluegrass, country and rock. Wharff grew up surrounded by bluegrass through his father’s band The Slack Family, developing a deep connection with the sound from a young age.
Into his teenage years, the now 20-year-old artist began writing his own songs as a way of recreating the raw emotions and feelings of his past. In 2023, Wharff met drummer Garrett Howell and bassist Ryan Atchison at an open mic night in downtown Richmond, forming Tobacco Flatts almost instantly. Now, the band has burst onto the scene with snippets of jaw-dropping original songs posted to TikTok and Reels, cementing the newly formed group as one of the most promising acts of 2024.
