We loved our stay at Above The River we rented sxs and rode around the mountains and enjoyed the river with our tubes

Above the river was just what I was looking for in a romantic getaway. A cabin in the mountains with all the comforts of home and some. Cathedral ceilings, watching deer from the deck. Star gazing from the hot tub at night while the steam rose up. Grilled Cowboy Ribeyes and steamed crab legs (I had to buy a pot to steam crab legs in). Hiked down to the private area on the river reserved just for the cabin. Other than the hike back up to the cabin, the hardest part about our stay was leaving. We opted for the late checkout, and wish we could’ve just moved in. Can’t wait to come back!

We had a really lovely time at Above the River. The gas log fireplace kept us warm and toasty on several below-freezing nights. And what could be more wintry than sitting in the hot tub while it's snowing??? It is a bit of a steep walk down to the river, and it's tough going in the snow/mud. There was plenty of room for the three of us and our dogs. We were actually surprised by how many other homes are in the area, but when the trees are leafed out, you'll probably never see them! If you're going to be snowed in like we were, the kitchen could use a good chef's knife. We absolutely should have heeded the advice of having four-wheel drive or parking at the top of the driveway! We'd love to return sometime when the weather is more cooperative!

The home was perfect for our family's early holiday get together. Everything was clean and prepared well for our visit. The dog loved getting in the river and watching the deer walk by the front door. We really enjoyed spending time together by the fireplace and catching up.

Great house on the hill. The river is a short 7 min walk down a fairly easy trail to the river where there are steps down to the river a private area just for this house. The water was about waist deep at the deepest and the river was flowing slowly. The house has a small hot tub but fits 4 easily and a firepit up by the driveway. The beds were comfy. A lot of cooking utensils and pots and pans were plenty. gas fireplace. Larger bed on third level loft but full bathroom upstairs Main level has two bedrooms and one full bath and basement level is playroom with full bath and laundry room. TV and card table and couch and chair to watch movies. Fun house to stay at love it.

A lovely cabin in the mountains. Close to the river, sitting on the deck feels like sitting in the tree tops. Driveway was very steep but it's in the mountains so you have to expect it, plus there is a parking spot at the top if you need to use it instead. The cabin was well equipped and very clean. So happy we got to take our dog with us - he loved it. Very quiet spot but close enough to get places. We would definitely return.

Above The River is a beautiful three story cabin that is appropriately named as it is situated on the side of the mountain above the river. The river is close enough that you can hear it if the environment is quite. Our stay was in August. You could see glimpses of the river from the back deck through the trees if you made it a point to look for it. The river would be very visible if you were there when the trees were without their leaves. We tubed in the river which was so clear and beautiful. There was plenty of games, puzzles, books and movies for when we were inside. We enjoyed making memories and we would definitely stay at this rental again.

Very cozy, comfortable home. Loved the wrap around deck, especially on a rainy night relaxing with family. The driveway was a bit of a challenge but we made it with a running start! Clean and well equipped, I would be happy to stay again!

Our family enjoyed the mountain getaway! A nice quiet escape with plenty of space. The walk down to the river is a nice walk through the woods and is the five minutes indicated. The walk back up may take a few minutes longer, but still a great amenity to be so close to the water and able to walk through nature. The recommendation for 4WD would definitely be necessary for the driveway in the winter, but was very doable - but that was the only spot we felt it would be needed. Great spot - enjoyed the stay!

We loved this cabin, it was beautiful, spacious, comfortable and in such a peaceful setting. Plus, it was one of the cleanest rentals we've ever stayed at! The hot tub worked great. The access to and view of the river was an added bonus. The rental agency responded quickly to all questions and requests. We would definitely rent this cabin again!

Overall, nice, clean, spacious home with excellent amenities and comfortable furniture. Quiet, peaceful retreat. Some of the cookware could be updated a bit, but otherwise no complaints. The short hike to the river was nice.

We loved our stay. The cabin was awesome. The hike to the river is tough and would not recommend for the elderly. House was super clean. Great fishing spots close by. We hung out on the huge deck everynight. Made some great family memories. River access point was not the greatest fishing spot but we did our best. Highly encourage others to make the trip to river girl in Todd NC and go on a paddle trip. This place really put us back in touch with Nature yet had all the modern conveniences of home.

We had a wonderful stay! The house had everything we needed to keep kids entertained! We seriously did not want to leave. Amazing wildlife in the area. Saw deer everyday, one day watched them play in the river down from the property. The river is a short walk, but we are a hiking family so that did not phase us at all including my 3 year old. Loved the separation of the down stair den from the rest of the house. Beds were comfy. It gave my teens separate places to chill and watch what they wanted on tv. A lot to do within an hour drive. The only complaint was the floors were not very clean when we arrived, but everything else was spotless so we didn’t sweat that too much. Would love to come back!

This was a perfect fit for me and my family. Surrounded by trees and nature. The game room was a favorite for my grandchildren. We had plenty of room to lounge and relax. Plenty of kitchen items as we cooked each morning and evening. The master is a loft not a private room, but it is set back enough you cannot see from upstairs.

We had a great stay! Loved the cabin. It is so quiet we heard the rain hit the leaves.Just what I needed to relax. Cabin us close to many great restaurants. Put your vehicle in 2nd gear to get up the driveway and you will have no problem, my 16 year old did great. Hike to river is moderate level and worth it when you get there.

Very nice cabin,we hope to come back at some point. This year for Thanksgiving it was just my immediate family of 4 on our annual mountain trip, so we switched to Above the River cabin and were very pleased. It was perfect size, the downstairs rec room was added space we didn't need, but we enjoyed the air hockey. Especially loved the short hike to the river and the walk along the river road. beautiful setting, felt like we were the only ones there most of the time. Enjoyed the fire pit outside and the gas fire inside. Kitchen had just about everything we needed to cook our Thanksgiving meal and we were certainly able to improvise with what was available. Would suggest additional spoons (teaspoons, seemed to be short spoons in the silverware set.) and some measuring cups, but again we could improvise. House very comfortable and well located, enjoyed hike at New River park and a coffee in West Jefferson. Was really our first real vacation/trip since Covid hit and we felt very relaxed. Thank you.

Our family of 5 stayed in this wonderfully appointed cabin (full of so many amenities) and had an incredible time! The short hike down to the river was a great little adventure. There is so much to do both in the cabin and outside in the surrounding area that we are looking forward to coming back soon!

Nice place, nice deck. Bring river towels, they dont provide them. If you're expecting a river view,theres not one but the short walk is worth it. Look out for poison ivy.

We loved the location and features of this cabin. Gorgeous river, wonderful hot tub and game room, well appointed kitchen, very convenient to stores and restaurants yet private. Wonderful cabin for dogs and children to enjoy and spread out. I think it needs to be pointed out to future guests that the master is actually an open loft with no privacy. Also the upstairs shower has very low pressure and limited hot water and could hopefully be fixed.

We enjoyed our stay tremendously. This cabin was very clean and well-maintained. There is a good trail down to the river that was easy to walk. There are plenty of places to shop for food in the area that are close, but not too close. We saw small deer every day from the kitchen window. It was very peaceful. The driveway is a little steep and I had a little difficulty getting out when the ground was wet, but that won’t keep me from returning again.

We stayed here for 3 nights and the house was exactly as described. The home was clean and everything was just as pictured and advertised. The cable TV was clear and the internet was fast. My speed test obtained speeds around 80mb. There was plenty of room for 8 people without feeling cramped. The hot tub was on the small size. There is one TV on the main floor that has HDMI but the one in the basement is an old tube TV and has no HDMI inputs.

The property description was accurate. Our grandsons loved the basement game room but they were too young to do much playing in the river since it was too swift. The management office was gracious. The note on the door says the key is beside the door. The key is actually on a post across from the door. The house was clean, the kitchen was well stocked and the fire pit was great. I would recommend Above The River.

My entire family was forced to leave our home due to Hurricane Florence. We couldn’t stay at a hotel because we had to many people and our pet with us. I went online and found this wonderful cabin in West Jefferson. From start to finish we was treated like family. The cabin was amazing. The views were amazing as well. Cable, WiFi, games for the kids, hot tub. We almost forgot about the hurricane it was so nice.

Everything was really great. The location, the cabin and the weather. Short drive to a supermarket that had more to offer than most markets and the food in downtown West Jefferson at Boondock's Brewery was great. We will definitely do it again !

The cabin was VERY nice. The only problem we had was that the grill only lit on one of the back burners, which made it impossible to use. Needs some light bulbs and batteries for remotes. Otherwise, GREAT!

Beautiful, well maintained and clean house in the woods. Had everything we needed except for a lighter for the grill. The river front area is nice and shady, but it really needs a way to get into the water - steep muddy bank made it impossible. Overall a quiet and lovely location - no river view from the house.

The owner is planning to put steps at the river area for the easier access, but due to unusually rainy spring and high level of the river, the plan to do so was delayed. The overall condition of the u it was very nice. Layout was cozy for lounging and the views and easy walk to the river made it a great location for us. Only thing that I would change is the water in the shower upstairs got warm but not really hot but this was a minor issue

We really enjoyed the cabin. The cabin was very clean and the beds were very comfortable. We used the hot tub several times a day with the kids. We also walked to the river several times to fish. Enjoyed s'mores by the fire at night. Would recommend trip into West Jefferson. Great town with lots of shopping and restaurants. Overall had a great trip and would recommend this cabin to anyone looking to get away and relax.

We rented the cabin with several other couples for a valentine's weekend getaway. Great spot near a lovely town with great accommodations. We were all pleasantly surprised! Very few complaints: There was a lot of trash in the woods from previous guests (we cleaned it up); The pool table is a bit lackluster, but otherwise everything is great!

This is an amazing cabin. It has lots of room and privacy. If it had the river view , it would be perfect. We were a little freaked out the main floor and basement didn't have blinds. That would have been nice at night.

The cabin was beautiful, spacious and clean, had everything you might need. Beds were confortable and provides lots of blankets and pillows. Breath taking views and exceptional location for forest and mountain lovers and total get away. Very close to Walmart, cvs, Wendy's. Friendly staff and very approachable and kind.

Totally enjoyed our brief stay. The cabin was spacious & well kept. All the accessories we needed, except for a hair dryer. Bad hair for a couple days!

We arrived to the cabin on a Friday evening and were immediately thrilled for the weekend to come! All the furniture was comfortable, cabin was clean, and the views were beautiful! We had a couple little hiccups along the way, the fridge wasn't cooling like it should, but we contacted the management company and they had someone out quickly and were so pleasant to deal with! The game room downstairs was definitely my favorite! So nice to hang out down there in the evenings, playing cards, listening to music with the view of the woods out the windows. All around wonderful stay! Would recommend!

Everything went great. The cabin was spacious and private and there was a short trail down to the river. We enjoyed hiking and local trips. We taught my grandkids about identifying tracks at the river, large raccoon and deer tracks. We could see the trout in the river. We had a great, fun, and peaceful family vacation. Would stay there again.

Our family really enjoyed our extended weekend. The weather was very unusual for January in the mountains. It actually rained instead of snowing. Luckily there were enough things to do at the cabin to keep the kids entertained. Our only wish was that the hot tub would have been on a covered porch. We still enjoyed it, just used our golf umbrellas. We look forward to going back!

everything was very nice I will say one of the fans in the 1ST bedroom is out of balance and had a death wobble when i gets up to speed ..and a loose kitchen faucet knob in the kitchen..but over all beautiful home ..close to Boone and the ski resorts

This cabin was very nice and we got a great deal on it. It was very spacious and fit our needs perfectly. It was clean. It was kind of far away from everything, but there was an awesome view that made up for it right on the river. I would stay there again for sure!!

The vacation house was nice but have a couple of disappointments. Games missing pieces, hockey table's cord was cut, light bulbs out or flicking, driveway is a pain, no master bedroom it was open to the below living room and kitchen. The house was clean and neatly labeled. Since the house does not have trash collection we had to take it. So with a fully loaded car my wife had to ride with with the trash in the passenger seat. There was no location given on where to take the trash so I ended traveling a whole town over to find a dumpster. The driveway is very steep, very. it needs to be paved or at least packed. The loose gravel caused us to get get suck twice when trying to leave. To make a place for my mother to join us at the firepit I had to dig out a level spot, the whole thing was on the side of a hill. The house is nice but just needs some finishing touches and fixes.

We're very sorry to hear about this disappointment. It's a bit of a surprise after the first rave review as this is a new property to our rental program and a beautiful, well equipped one at that. Unfortunately Ashe County does not offer trash pick up service. There are local convenience centers located throughout the area and detailed instructions, along with closest address, map and operating hours are included in the property binder. There is a steep incline at the end of the driveway and we recommend you follow the instructions on how to navigate that section which are posted as well. Steep, gravel roads are very common in our mountainous area. We're always happy to discuss check out details or give recommendations at any point during your stay, please reach out to us so we can help. We wish these guests would have touched base so we could better assist them as well as remedy some of the other issues.
